Ever notice some creative productions look nice but just don't work? Or work once but maintenance and updates take forever? Well, so did Peter Seebach. Writing for IBM developerWorks, Peter notes:
The problem is, strictly separating designers from developers has resulted in a Web built by people frightfully unaware of the standards and technologies required to make it go. Most Web pages today extend well beyond the limited scope of HTML, and a good many of them bring together a "pure" programming language like Java or C++...
Designers who have been taught to not think of themselves as programmers take little responsibility for understanding how their designs translate into code...The end result is a generation of Web designers and developers who are attempting to build increasingly sophisticated Web sites without reference to the best practices of software engineering.
So within the context of a creative endeavor, what does the above really mean? Simply this: creative projects must use engineering techniques, too. Otherwise the technical aspects will swamp the project and quality will suffer.
The quote talks about web sites, but we've seen this happen for other technologies, too. For example, even delivering content in multiple incompatible formats becomes a problem as we upgrade to HD radio and television.
We pledge the following to all customers for all projects, no matter how large or small:
Message: We will effectively deliver the customer's mission and message. Fruitful communication with the audience is our primary measure of success.
Medium: We will use the simplest, most practical technology possible to bring a project to reality. Bleeding edge technology, or "resume ware," will be ignored.
Maintenance: We will design to reduce life cycle ownership costs. New development always considers the reality of future maintenance.
